What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2 or HBOT) is a unique method of delivering high doses of oxygen in order to help the body heal.
  • "Hyperbaric" means barometric pressure greater than sea level air.  It is accomplished by breathing 100% oxygen while inside a hyperbaric chamber. The chamber is pressurized to two or three times the atmospheric pressure. This results in increased tissue oxygen concentration of 15 to 20 times normal.
  • Treatment usually lasts about 90 minutes. Patient relaxes during this time or has an option to watch television and can communicate via a two-way intercom system.
